News from the Chair of Mineral Processing!
At the annual waste management awards of the Austrian Water and Waste Management Federation (ÖWAV) and the Austrian Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism on the 17 th of April the project consortium of the Research Studio Austria „Plastic Reborn“ received the special award „Think the future – young ideas for waste management” 2018. The consortium consists of the chairs of Mineral Processing (AuV), Process Technology and Industrial Environmental Protection (VTIU) and Waste Processing Technology and Waste Management (AVAW) of the Montanuniversität Leoben as well as the industrial partners OMV Refining and Marketing GmbH (OMV) and IFE Processing Technologies.
In course of this project - which is funded by the Austrian Funding Corporation (FFG) – Dipl.-Ing. Daniel Schwabl (AuV), Dr. mont. Markus Bauer (VTIU) and Dipl.-Ing. Lukas Kranzinger (AVAW) as well as DDipl.-Ing. Wolfgang Hofer (OMV) developed a novel wet-mechanic separation process for plastic waste fractions, which could not be chemically or materially recycled due to their impurities and heterogeneity. This separation process was further studied in an ad hoc built small scale treatment plant. The obtained results show a promising opportunity to make large additional waste plastic fractions accessible for chemical and material recycling. Thereby this project can have a significant share to implanting a circular economy within the polymer sector.
The annual Mineral Processing Seminar will take place at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben from 25th - 26th January 2018.
